If you knew your odds of developing breast cancer were as high as 86%, what would you do next? The Curse is a role-playing game about making difficult health decisions.
"It is meant to tackle a serious topic with nuance," explains designer Lizzie Stark, ”and to provide an interesting player experience that [lends] insight into a situation that many women face.
"It’s written in the Danish freeform tradition, which means it is an analog roleplaying game in which a strong game master directs the players in scenes that the game script stipulates. The players, in turn, act out the scenes physically, rather than describing their actions verbally." The Curse first premiered at this year’s Fastaval, a Danish gaming convention.
The Curse requires four players and a GM. Because the game mines some heavy themes—including BRCA mutation, hereditary illness, preventative mastectomies, and some deeply emotional territory—the game is not recommended for younger players.
